Shogo Sasaki Award
Dr. Shogo Sasaki (1916-2014, Emeritus Professor of Keio University and Tokai University) was appointed as an Associate Professor and Professor of Department of Bacteriology, Keio University School of Medicine, in 1951 and1963, respectively. Then, Dr. Sasaki became the first Dean of School of Medicine, Tokai University in 1974. In Tokai University, Dr. Sasaki progressed an advanced study concerning not only basic experiments using germfree animal but also bone marrow transplantation therapy at sterile hospital rooms.
Dr. Sasaki was one of the board members of the Japanese Association of Germfree Life and Gnotobiology (JAGG) in 1968 when the JAGG was founded. Dr. Sasaki organized the 12th annual meeting of JAGG in 1979, and became a President of JAGG from 1993 to 2007, and he made a great effort to activate JAGG.
For international contribution, Dr. Sasaki organized the 7th International Symposium on Gnotobiology (ISG) in 1981, and became a President of International Association for Gnotobiology (IAG) from 1993 to 1996, and made a great effort to activate IAG.
Dr. Sasaki passed away in November 2014, and then his bereaved family gave a donation to JAGG. After careful discussion at board meeting of the society, JAGG established a Shogo Sasaki Award in 2015. The purpose of the Award is to encourage JAGG young members in the field of gnotobiology who presented at a regular oral session of the annual meeting. Shogo Sasaki Award was awarded first to the best presenter in the 48th annual meeting of JAGG in January 2016. By awarding Shogo Sasaki Award, JAGG expects that the awardees will make a great progress in the research works in the field of gnotobiology.
